All Britain all Breeds Calf Show, October 8th /9th 2011.

Results from Kim Sales.

This years South West Dairy Show saw 7 exhibitors with 20 adult cattle forward. Although down on numbers

from the previous year, there was quality throughout the lines and Judge David Mann had difficulty in

separating the top placings in several of the classes.

Breed Champion for the second year was Tredinney Yogi's Gabrielle 2 by Yogi Bear and exhibited by The Warrren Family from Penzance in Cornwall. This third calver was very closely followed by Blacknor Tania, a second calver by Sweet Symphoney's Cassidy from Ian and David Crouch in Dorset. This was a repeat of last years top two and were a credit to the breed and their owners.

Honiton Show, Thursday 4th August 2011.

Laura Sales gives us her Show Report:

My judging appointment at Honiton Show proved to be a very wet one with rain showers throughout the day. First class of the day was for maiden heifers with 5 quality heifers forward and the biggest class of the day. I had no hesitation in awarding the 1st place ribbon to the Greenslade Family's Greensfield Iceburg Junes Star. This stylish heifer paraded herself on good legs and feet, showed openness of rib and cleaness of bone. It was her dairyness and angularity that gave her the advantage over my 2nd placed animal Wiltown Mayflower by Sherberts Mint. Another  well grown, mature heifer showing promise underneath and walking on good legs and feet. This style on parade gave her the edge over 3rd placed Kingwell Lucky Trout from Jon White. Trout having the advantage over 2 very sweet heifers from the Adams' in 4th & 5th for her maturity and depth of body and openess of rib.

Greensfield Iceburg June Star

My next classes proved easier with one in calf heifer forward, a heifer in milk and cow in milk all from the Greenslade's.

I found my champion in Heifer in milk Greensfield Lamar Phylis, this deep, open heifer walked on excellent legs and feet, was attached well in the fore and rear udder and was full of milk. It was her teat placement and quality and her strength through the front end that gave her the advantage on the day over the cow in milk Greensfield Oldenburg Noble, nevertheless a worthy reserve again full of milk and showing dairyness and parading well. I gave an honourable mention to the Maiden Heifer as I felt she deserved a mention showing great promise for the future.

Greensfield Lamar Phylis

Dairy Event and Livestock Show 2011.

Held at the NEC, Birmingham, September 6th/7th.

Champion Guernsey, Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86 from Richard Norman and Cathryn Mills,

shown by Laura Sales.

Colin Gleed gives us his Show Report:

The National All Breeds Show was held on the 6th and 7th September at the NEC, Birmingham. THe heifer classes being judged on the first day, with the cow classes on day two. Although there were only 12 animals forward, the standard was very high and I had some very difficult decisions to make.

The first class forward, which was for maiden heifers, born in 2010, produced three very dairy heifers by Four winds Royal Delta and a more mature animal by Four winds Showtime. I plumped for Hilcol Delta Gwawr from the Evans family in first place. I was very impressed by this 15 month old heifer, as she was well balanced, with a level topline, correct rump structure, excellent teat placement and she paraded really well. She had the advantage in most respects over the second placed heifer Cadbury Royal Delta Pretty 87 from R. Norman and Miss C Mills that nevertheless was a deep bodied dairy heifer, whose strength put her ahead of the the third animal Hilcol Delta Catrin, from the Evans Family, who lacked the growth of the first two, but had a lot of quality, which gave her the advantage over Sharnford Showtime Sienna from Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses, that was a strong heifer but the first three had superior dairyness and quality.

There was only one In Calf Heifer, but it was a good one. She was Cracker Banger Margaret by Cracker Banger Boy and owned by Ian Crouch and Richard Norman. She had all the qualities of the leading heifer from the first class, plus a little extra strength and maturity. It was because of this, I made her my Champion Maiden Heifer. (Editors Note: Margaret was last years Champion Calf at All Breeds Calf Show. )

The Heifer in Milk Class came next, and this produced a very impressive Champion Heifer in Rosewood Tradition Suzi by Brown Eden Tradition owned by D & H Cox and bred by Rita Dunn. Once again she was very well balanced and had a superb tight udder. It was the superior udder that gave her the advantage over the second animal Cadbury Hawk Onyx 2 from Norman and Mills. This Jengold Glacier Hawk daughter, was a powerful, deep bodied heifer, and it was this extra power that gave her the advantage over the smart third placed  animal Sharnford Lucinda, by Land of Living P Garrett, from Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses.

I was very pleased to find three outstanding class winners on one day, and hopefully they will be all very successful in the future.

On day two, there was only a total of four cows forward in two classes, but the first of these, with three entries, gave me one of the toughest decisions I have had to make in a judging career approaching 50 shows. In first place I decided to go with Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86, sired by Jensgold glacier Hawk and exhibited by Norman & Mills. This lovely young cow was well balanced throughout with a superb body and good teat placings. She also paraded really well, expertly shown by Laura Sales. She needed all these things in her favour as the second place cow was was my Bath & West Show Champion from last year, Bickfield Rainbow 51, sired by Slindon Posies Ambionic, owned by the Evans and Sales Partnership and bred by M. Durbin. This supreme Dairy cow, had most of the traits of as the first animal, but the superior teat position of the first cow was just enough to tip the balance. There was also a very smart young cow in third place from I & D Crouch, Blacknor Liz 3 by Sweet Symphoney's Cassidy. She, however, did not walk properly on the day so I had no option at this standard than to put her behind the others.

The only cow in the final class was Lodor Sioned 2 by Dawn Jay Ivor and owned by the Evans family. This was a lovely bodied 5th calver with a super topline but was unfortunately uneven in the rear udder which cost her a chance in the Championship.

On to the Championship which consisted of my first two young cows, the senior cow and the Milk heifer. I had to go with my first place junior cow but it was still a close decision. The Champion was Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86  who also had Best Udder and reseve was Bickfield Rainbow 51. The Honourable Mention went to the Milk Heifer. Rosewood Tradition Suzi.

The standard of the cattle overall was very high, but I think it is important for the Breed to make sure we have a presence at this show with the best cattle possible.

I would like to thank Digby for his work on the Stand, Andrew Hope for sending his excellent Cheshire Brie Cheese, the joint Presidents George and Elsie "I had them the other way round" Fallows, who were as usual great company, Neil Sales, who did an excellent job as steward and all the exhibitors and leaders who helped make it a successful show.

Colin Gleed.

Frome Show, September 10th 2011.

Here is a report from Chris Watson.

On a heavily overcast morning on Sat 10 Sept, luckily we did not get wet, I had 2 senior cows and 9 maiden heifers brought before me from 2 exhibitors.

We started with 3 calves under 6 months old all from Tregallent Farms and by Ezekiel. The winner was, Tregallant Ezekiel Lady who had the advantage in the thurls and teat placenment. The second class for calves under 12 months was won by the more mature Pacific daughter, Wiltown Chiddingstone Margaret. Brian and Sheila Adams also won the 3rd class of four a really good backended heifer with good teat placement beat two good dairy heifers by Spider and Mint.

Tregallent Farms brought out two good VG cows, Tregallent Oakley BeBo to retain the cow class and Championship, and Tregallent Elizabeth, by Highness to win the Dry cow class and Reserve Championship.

Disappointing numbers but a good quality turnout.

Chris Watson.

Summer Shows 2011

North Somerset Show.

SHOW REPORT BY KIM SALES.

The first Show of the season saw 5 exhibitors, ARC Addington Fund, Brian and Sheila Adams, The Greenslade Family, The Parfitt Family and Richard Norman & Cathryn Mills bring 20 cattle for Judge David Crouch to peruse.

Once again the Maiden Heifer class proved to be the largest of the day with 7 calves forward. it is good to see our Future Golden Breeders continuing with their enthusiasm in preparing and showing their animals.

.

Jo, Elissa and Justina Langley take top 3 spots.

The Langley Girls took the top three places in this class, making Grandad Colin Parfitt very proud. Also making her debut in the show ring was 7 year old Victoria Sales who helped to show Norman and Mills calf aided by her cousin Laura.

Novice, Victoria Sales with her cousin, Laura.

Champion of the day was Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86 owned and bred by Richard Norman and Cathryn Mills and prepared and shown in their absence by Laura Sales.

Breed Champion, Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86.

This Heifer in milk was first seen in the show ring two years ago as a calf and has won numerous prizes during the past 2 seasons, most notably being placed second to Blacknor Tania at the 2010 South West Dairy Show in a wonderfull class of in Milk Heifers. She has matured into a superb upstanding animal and will be one to watch out for at the Autumn shows, once she has calved again.

Reserve Champion was Greensfield Icy Phyliss from the Greenslade Family, a Junior Cow in Milk also well known for her previous achievments.

I spoke to David Crouch after the judging and here are his comments on the classes.

Maiden Heifer Born on or after 1. 3 10.

1st prize went to C G Parfit & Sons Graylands Bouncy Starlight by G. Meadowsweets McCoy, who was a beautifull upstanding dairy heifer with plenty of width behind which gave her the advantage over 2nd placed Graylands Hugette 28 byYogi's Prince, who although less mature than some of the others in the class, was extremely dairylike as was third placed Graylands Meadowsweet by Yogi's Andante a nicely balanced calf.

4. Norman & Mills. Cadbury Royal Delta Pretty 87.

5. B & S Adam. Wiltown Margaret by Shalford Pacific.

6. B & S Adams. Wiltown Mayflower by Sherberts Mint.

7. Greenslade. Greensfield Iceburg Star by G. Stinky Iceburg.

Maiden Heifer Class.

Heifer In Calf.

This class was topped by Cadbury Hawk Poppy 73  from Norman & Mills. She had an excellent topline with plenty of width and well balanced throughout. Second place went to ARC Addington Funds, Aber Showtime Dancer 5, another well balanced heifer but just lacked the width in the chest of the first placed animal. Third was Graylands Elissa 9 by G. Meadowsweets McCoy from the Parfitts, a nicely balanced heifer but not quite as dairy as the first two. Fourth was the less mature Greensfield Lamar Phyliss from the Grenslades.

Heifer in Calf Class.

Heifer In Milk.

The only heifer forward was Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86 from Norman & Mills. She was a superb heifer throughout showing strength , but full of dairyness.

Heifer in Milk.

Cow in Calf.

First place went to Greensfield Icy Lady from the Greenslades, a tall upstanding cow, whose dairyness gave her the advantage over less mature second placed Graylands Meadowsweet 62 by G. Samantha's Simon.

Cow in Calf Class.

Cow in Milk born on or after 1.6.06.

First Prize went to Greensfield Icy Phyliss from the Greenslades, an excellent Dairy cow who showed herself well and was full of milk. Second was Graylands Hugette 21 by Royal Delta, another lovely dairy cow which gave her the advantage over Graylands Jackie 4 by G. Samantha's Simon who just lacked the body depth of the previous two animals.

Junior Cow Class.

Senior Cow born before 1.6.06.

In First place was Mayne Aaron Sylvia from Norman & Mills. She was a super Dairy cow who just lacked over the topline but was full of milk, which gave her the advantage over second placed Graylands Meadowsweet 59 by Sonny Boy, a lovely mature cow but not as open ribbed as the first cow. In third was the very correct, but less mature, Graylands Hugette 18 by Holiday.

Senior Cow Class.

Pair of Females.

This class was won by Norman and Mills with their hefer in milk and senior cow. Second were the Parfitts and third were the Greenslades followed by a sweet pair of calves from Brian and Sheila Adams but were lacking in the maturity of the previous 3 pairs.

Pairs Line Up.

Group of Three.

The Group class was won by the Parfitts with three mature milk cows which were followed by Norman and Mills' group which was less balanced as it included an in calf heifer.

Group of Three Class

My Breed Champion on the day was Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86 from Richard Norman and Cathryn Mills. An excellent example of the modern day Guernsey. Reserve was the very dairy like Greensfield Icy Phyliss from the Greenslade Family a lovely second calver who just lacked the stature and depth of my champion.

Champion and Reserve.

I would like to thank all the exhibitors, handlers and stewards for a most enjojable day at the North Somerset Show.

David Crouch.

Devon County Show.

Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st May.

At Westpoint, Exeter. Judging starts at 9am on Friday.

Show Report by Phillip Cox.

It was an honour to have been asked to judge The Devon County Show on 20th May and although the skies were a little overcast, we avoided the customary downpours that so often occur on judging day.

Although numbers were a little down on previous shows, the standard of entry was high, particularly in the youngstock present. My congratulations to all the competitors on the quality of animals forward.

The first class, Heifer born on or after the 1st April 2010, was the biggest of the day with 6 entries. My 1st place went to Greensfield Iceberg Star by Greensfield Stinky Iceberg, not the biggest calf in the the class, she had excellent depth throughout which put her ahead of my second place calf, Brian and Sheila Adams' Willtown Mayflower by Spring Walk Sherbert's Mint, who was particularly strong through the loin and paraded well on good legs. This was a particularly even class throughout except for the much younger Greensfield Tiller Phyllis who even as a young calf is showing great potential.

Calf Class.

The next class had only one entry, Greensfield Lucky Shilling by Cracker Lucky King who showed great maturity.

Greensfield Lucky Shilling

There were 4 entries in the Heifer in Calf Class. My 1st place went to ARC Addington Funds Aber Showtime Dancer 5 shown by Brian Adams. This was a very strong heifer showing great width in the rear to reveal an udder which shows tremendous promise. In second place was Jon White's Kingwell Atlantic Portago, followed by his Kingwell HP Rum Savoye by Shalford Rumbustious with Greensfield May King Pippin bringing up the rear.

In Calf Heifer Class.

Unfortunately there was only one entry in the Dry Cow class, but she proved to be a quality entry in the form of Greensfield Icy Lady whom I'm sure will classify well when she calves down- I was very impressed with this cow. (Editors Note: Icy Lady was last years Devon Champion.)

Greensfield Icy Lady.

Again, only one entry in the Heifer in Milk Class, Greenfield Mozi Pippin, by Greensfield Mozi May

The Cow in  Milk Class had 3 good cows on display, but it was Greenfield Icy Phyllis by Spring Walk Icy Iceberg that caught my eye as she paraded like a true professional on excellent legs and feet. She also displayed outstanding depth in the body and spring of rib. The cows in 2nd and 3rd place, both by Greensfield Jon's Hero, were quite similar but Jon White's Kingwell Hero's Tangerine was superior in the udder to Kingwell HP Hero's Kavi who showed great body depth.

Cow in Milk Class.

Next came the group of 3 and the Pairs. The Greenslades group of Youngstock were particularly well matched and on the whole paraded better than Jon Whites group of 3 cows.

The Pairs were won by the Greenslades Icy Phyllis and Icy lady both excellent cows who went on to become my Champion and Reserve respectively.

Champion Guernsey Greensfield Icy Phyliss from the Greenslade Family

May I once again congratulate all the competitors  and express my thanks to the Devon County Show for their excellent hospitality and welcome.

Phillip Cox.

Royal Bath & West Show.

Wednesday 1st to Saturday 4th June.

At Shepton Mallett, Somerset.Judging starts 9.30 on Thursday.

Show Results by Kim Sales.

This years Royal Bath and West was unfortunately down on numbers of Cattle forward with only 15 senior animals in the catalogue from 6 exhibitors. Fortunately our Future Golden Breeders made up the numbers with 7 young calves to compete in the Showmanship and calf classes. The Langley girls, Jo Ellissa and Justina were joined by Louise and Elizabeth Mair and their friend Becky to make the Guernseys strong contenders in the Youngstock section.  Most notable result was a 1st place for Cadbury Royal Delta Pretty 87 from Richard Norman and Cathryn Mills who won the class for any other Dairy Breed Heifer born on or after 1st April 2010.

Cadbury Royal Delta Pretty 87.

Justina Langley with her second placed calf Graylands Meadowsweet 69th

This fresh calver now lives in Carmathen with Colin and Hillary and produced her 3rd Bull calf on 7th May. Nantwich and South Cheshire Show. Wednesday July 27th 2011.

It was my pleasure to be invited to judge at The Nantwich show. Neil and I made the 170 mile trip to Cheshire on Tuesday afternoon and stayed at the impressive Willington Hall Hotel overnight. Unfortunately, I only had three animals forward. Jess Hassel, being the show secretary, hadn't had enough time to prepare her animals and Andrew Hope had seen one fo his cows fall in the yard earlier in the week.

I had two in calf heifers forward and first place went to Thornton Imogen 2 bred by Andrew Hall and owned by George Wainwright. This superb daughter of Thornton Hermes is just springing to calve next month and had the advantage over the second placed heifer, in her hard topline. The heifer in second was Tiresford Kim Carmen, owned and bred by Andrew Hope. She is by Myrtles Rob Roy and a grandaughter of the great Tiresford Carmen. She also is due next month and showed great dairy strength throughout.

Thornton Imogen 2.

There was one Heifer in milk, Nuthurst Mayblossom by Four Winds Royal Delta, owned by Ken Prestidge and shown by Andrew Hope. She was a very freshly calved sweet heifer, full of dairyness and promise for the future. She was my choice for Champion Guernsey and George Wainwright's Heifer in calf was reserve.

Nuthurst Mayblossom.

Thanks to Andrew and George for making  the effort to turn out their cattle.
