Guernsey Wins Interbreed Championship at Royal Bath & West Show 2014

The Guernseys have done it again! Daf and Helen Cox have won the Interbreed Dairy Championship at the Royal Bath & West Show. Their second calf cow, Tredinney Yogi’s Primrose 29 beat the Holstein who was reserve and the Jersey Breed Champion.

Royal Bath & West Show 2014

This years Royal Bath & West Show was held at Shepton Mallet from May 28th to !st June and attracted new exhibitors in Sally and Nigel Phillips from Ilminster and Daf and Helen Cox from near Carmarthen, S. Wales. Sally and Nigel were showing their purchases from last November’s Gold Top Sale at Exeter Market, bred by Phillip and Caroline Cox and Helen and Daf were exhibiting last years Welsh Dairy Show Champion which was bred by James Warren.

Bickfield Indus 7th.

At the start of this years showing season, Laura and myself, thought that one of the cows at Bickfield deserved a wider audience than those who are milking her. Having been under TB movement restrictions for the past 4 years, we are now going into our fifth season of ringside viewing and wondering what might have been, especially as our brief window of being TB clear last autumn, yielded a Supreme Dairy Championship at Frome Show and Reserve Breed Champion at S.

Future Golden Breeders at Devon County Show 2014

5 young handlers took part in the Handling Classes on the Saturday of the Devon County Show and two young ladies were winners of their classes competing against the other dairy breeds. Isobel Phillips was placed first and Champion of the Under 10 classes ( beating the winner of the beef handling class) showing Wiltown Annabelle with whom she had won the maiden heifer class on Friday.

Tour of UK Guernsey herds by Italian farmers (Day 1) 2014

Simone Salverderi and Lorenzo Leso from the Po Valley (Milan) spent 3 days this week looking at UK Guernsey herds starting at the Beechgroves herd of the Lacey family, the visit started in the Farm Shop, where they were amazed to see that the customers help themselves and place the money into an “Honesty” box, they did not believe that such a system would work in Italy !

Top price of 2180gns was paid by Richard Norman from Somerset, for Blacknor Cracker Iceberg Diana, an 86 point heifer sold at Auction at Exeter Market on Friday April 11th. She was part of a consignment from Ian and David Crouch who were selling 12 Guernseys as part of a Gold Top Sale.

Guernseys wanted for Eire and Italy, the Netherlands and Romania

A buyer from Italy is planning to visit the UK in April to inspect herds and plans to establish a 100 strong herd of the “very best” Guernseys. The family that visited in October 2013 from Eire, has confirmed he hopes to be milking Guernseys in 2014.
